A very well written post! I really wish topics like this could make it in the papers but unfortunately bicycling is considered an undoable "sport" by far too many for all the wrong reasons. Thanks for articulating that it indeed can be doable and enjoyable by many, all we really have to do is value our surroundings and the human experience. (Note, I hope you don’t mind I shared this entry on BaltimoreSpokes.org TIA)

Hey,

I could go an at great length about this subject, but at heart, the problem is this: in the US (and to a lesser extent Canada) the bicycle is essentially a toy, whether for children or adults. In Europe, it's just one of several perfectly normal ways of moving around, so the needs of cyclists are automatically factored into urban transportation planning.

One of the worst things for cycling, in my view, is the construction of dedicated "pleasure" cycling trails. I remember these particulary from the two years I lived in DC. They aren't easy to get on and off, often don't go anywhere particularly relevant for commuting, and are generally useless for anything but excursions. But because they were built with everyone's tax dollars, that's where you are supposed to stay - as some asshole in a car will inevitably remind you when you dare to ride on the road.

I could go on...

Cheers,

I bike along the corridors of Va/Md/Dc and honestly, unless you do it at times when there's really no heavy traffic, it can be the most unenjoyable riding around. And when i say times when there's no heavy traffic i mean at 6am on a sunday.

Biking in Russia is the opposite, it's a completely hilly road near where I live.

Hills are horrible. -_-
